Born: August 3, 1871, Aurora, Illinois [Died] June 16, 1929. Winchcombe, England. American critic and literary historian. After graduating from Harvard University, he worked at the University of Oklahoma and other institutions, and was a professor at Washington University from 1908 to 1929. His major work, Main Currents in American Thought (3 volumes, 1927-30), had an enormous influence in the 1930s. Based on Taine's theory, he positioned literary history within the history of thought, and opposed aestheticism, emphasizing social and economic influences.
