Born: August 3, 1871, Aurora, Illinois
[Died] June 16, 1929. Winchcombe, England. American critic and literary historian. After graduating from Harvard University, he worked at the University of Oklahoma and other institutions, and was a professor at Washington University from 1908 to 1929. His major work, Main Currents in American Thought (3 volumes, 1927-30), had an enormous influence in the 1930s. Based on Taine's theory, he positioned literary history within the history of thought, and opposed aestheticism, emphasizing social and economic influences. His other works include Sinclair Lewis, Our Own Diogenes (27).
