It is a substance that easily crystallizes and is easily hydrolyzed with inorganic acids to return to the raw material, so it is used to purify and confirm aldehydes. It can also produce primary amines when reduced, and secondary amines can also be produced as by-products. There are two stereoisomers, called syn- and anti-forms. The syn-form can be converted to a nitrile by the addition of a dehydrating agent.
