…In 1876, Karl von Kupffer (1829-1902), a professor at the University of Berlin, stained liver with gold chloride and found star-shaped cells that stained with the dye, which he named stellate cells (Sternzellen). In 1898, he announced that cells that take up foreign substances (ink) in the endothelium of the sinusoidal capillaries in the liver of animals injected with India ink were stellate cells.
