During World War II, the British briefly occupied Comoros as a naval base in the Indian Ocean, but returned it to France after the war. In 1958, the Comoros held a national referendum on whether to remain in the French Community or to become independent, and chose the former, becoming a French overseas territory. In 1961, under A. Abdallah (leader of the Comoros Independence Union Party), the Comoros gained internal autonomy. In 1973, negotiations were held with the French government in Paris over the issue of independence, and a national referendum was held in December 1974 based on these negotiations. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Abdullah, A." are listed below.
