Niaux (English spelling)

Japanese: ニオー（英語表記）Niaux

A village in the Ariège department in southwestern France. Population: about 200. There are remains of cave paintings from the Late Paleolithic period. The huge cave runs horizontally through a limestone mountain range at an altitude of 1,190m, connecting two valleys. The cave facing Nihaut is called Nihaut Cave, and the one on the Ussat side across the mountain is called Lombrives Cave. The two caves are separated by a large pond 1,400m from the entrance of Nihaut Cave. The Nihaut Cave paintings were investigated by H. Breuil and É. Cartailhac in 1906 and revealed to be from the Paleolithic period.

フランス南西部，アリエージュ県にある村。人口約200。後期旧石器時代の洞窟壁画遺跡がある。洞窟は，標高1190mの石灰岩の山脈を横に貫通して，二つの谷を連絡する巨大なもので，ニオーに面した洞窟をニオー洞窟，山をへだてたユッサUssat側のものをロンブリーブLombrives洞窟という。両洞窟はニオー洞窟の入口から1400m奥にある大きな池によって隔てられている。ニオー洞窟の壁画は1906年にH.ブルイユとカルタイヤックÉ.Cartailhacによって調査され，旧石器時代のものであることが明らかにされた。
