A city in Warminsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship in northern Poland. In German it is called Elbing. A port city near the mouth of the Wisla River. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, it was part of Poland from 1466 to 1772. It developed as a seaport in the 16th century. It came under Prussian control from 1772, and was liberated in 1945 and became part of Poland. Industries such as metallurgy, heavy industry (turbines, etc.), lumbering, and brewing developed here.
