A large river in central Europe. It originates in the mountains in western Czech Republic, flows northwest through Germany, and empties into the North Sea near Cuxhaven. It is 1,165 km long, of which 761 km is in German territory, and 947 km is navigable by boat. The river is 250 m wide in Magdeburg, reaches 500 m in Hamburg, and widens to 15 km at its mouth. A network of canals has developed connecting it to the Baltic Sea, the Oder, the Ruhr, and other areas. Beginning with the British merchant adventurers who advanced to Hamburg in the mid-16th century, the Elbe has had deep ties with Western Europe, including Britain, and in the 19th century it became a major artery of the European continent, along with the Rhine. → Related topics Estuary | Germany | Labe [River] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
