Ishii Baku
Born: December 25, 1886 in Shimoiwakawa, Akita
[Died] January 7, 1962. Tokyo dancer. Real name Ishii Tadazumi. Known as the father of modern Japanese dance. He moved to Tokyo with the aim of becoming a writer, but later, under the stage name Ishii Hayashiro, he became a member of the Imperial Theatre Orchestra and the first class of its opera company, studying ballet under Giovanni V. Rosi. He advocated the "pure dance" movement together with Yamada Kosaku, and in 1916 he participated in the "New Theatre" group led by Oyamauchi Kaoru and Yamada Kosaku. In 1922, he traveled to Europe with his sister-in-law Ishii Konami, and in 1925 he traveled to the United States, returning to Japan the following year in 1926. In 1928, he opened the Ishii Baku Dance Institute in Jiyugaoka, Meguro Ward, Tokyo, and presented over 150 original dances. In April 1938, he opened the Ishii Baku Dance School (which was renamed the Ishii Baku Dance and Physical Education School in October), where he trained many students, including Choi Seung-hee, Tani Momoko, and Ishii Midori. He received the Tokyo Shimbun Dance Arts Award in 1954 and the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1955. His representative works include the large-scale work "Resurrected New World" (1933) and "Ningen Shaka" (1953, Minister of Education's Entertainment Encouragement Award), which he performed in his later years after he had almost lost his eyesight. His eldest son, Ishii Kan, and third son, Ishii Maki, were active as composers.
