Kanpur (English spelling)
Kanpur is a commercial and industrial city in the central part of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It is the administrative capital of Kanpur district. It is located on the Ganges River, about 75 km southwest of Lucknow. Until the 18th century, it was merely a village, but the population became concentrated here after the British East India Company made it an important forward base. It was the site of a fierce battle in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and is still a strategic military location with an army barracks and an air force base. The annual rainfall is about 800 mm, and it is dry in the summer, but the irrigation channels from the Ganges River make the surrounding area rich in rice, wheat, millet, sugarcane, cotton, and other crops. It is an industrial city with a thriving large-scale machinery and cotton industry, as well as leather, chemicals, rice milling, sugar refining, flour milling, and oil extraction, and is home to large-scale wholesale businesses of cotton products, general merchandise, sugar, spices, and grains. It is a major junction of railways, roads, and air routes, making it a key transportation hub. Many of the colleges formerly belonging to Agra University were transferred to Kanpur University, which was established in 1966. Other major universities include the medical school of Lucknow University and the Indian Institute of Engineering. Population: 1,958,282 (1991).
