Secession

Japanese: ゼツェッシオン

An art movement that emerged in succession in Germany and Austria at the end of the 19th century. Also known as the Secession, it is translated as "Secession." It aimed to move away from academic art and create original works. It was first founded in Munich in 1892 by the symbolist painter Stuck and others, with Behrens and others participating. In 1897, Klimt was formed in Vienna with Olbrich, J. Hoffmann and others (see Art Nouveau), and in 1899 it was also founded in Berlin by Liebermann and others. All of these played leading roles in art, crafts and architecture in the German-speaking world through the early 20th century.

19世紀末ドイツ，オーストリアに相次いで興った芸術運動。〈セセッションSecession〉ともいい，〈分離派〉と訳される。アカデミックな芸術から離れて個性的な創造を目ざした。1892年ミュンヘンで象徴主義の画家シュトゥックらによって設立されたのが最初で，ベーレンスらが参加した。1897年にはウィーンでクリムトを中心にオルブリヒ，J.ホフマンらが結成（アール・ヌーボー参照），また1899年にはリーバーマンらによってベルリンでも設立された。いずれも20世紀初頭にかけてドイツ圏での美術・工芸・建築における主導的役割を果たした。
