A village in the Dordogne department in southwestern France. Population: 1600. Paleolithic cave ruins. The murals were discovered by the Frenchman L. Nougier in 1956, and a dispute arose between the Breuil and Blanc schools over their authenticity. Mammoths, rhinos, horses, goats and bison are depicted in black monochrome or engraved lines, and all date to the Magdalenian period, with the crudely drawn black drawings in particular belonging to the early Magdalenian period.
