Kanagi

Japanese:
Kanagi

The former name of the town (Kanagi-machi) was in Kitatsugaru-gun, northwest of Aomori Prefecture. It is currently located in the northern part of the southern part of Goshogawara City, which is divided into north and south by the southern part of Nakadomari Town. It was established as a town in 1920 (Taisho 9). In 1955 (Showa 30), it merged with the villages of Kiraichi and Kase. In 2005 (Heisei 17), it was merged into Goshogawara City. The eastern part of the former town area is the Tsugaru Mountains, which are mostly national forests, while the western part is the Tsugaru Plain, where the Iwaki River and its tributaries flow. The village was founded in the early modern period, and full-scale development began as Kanagi Shinden during the Genroku period (1688-1704). In 1683 (Tenwa 3), the Kanagi River mouth guardhouse was established, and in 1687 (Jokyo 4), a magistrate's office was established to govern the 24 villages of the Kanagi group, and the area developed as the center of northern Tsugaru. The area mainly produces rice and timber, but also produces apples. It became more convenient after the Tsugaru Railway opened in 1930 (Showa 5), but its central role as a region has declined. Dazai Osamu's birthplace is located here.
