1857‐1920 Italian socialist. Grew up under the influence of Lombardy positivism and studied law. A friend of Turati. Participated in the peasant movement, shifted from republicanism to socialism, and cooperated with Social Critique from 1891 onwards. Participated in the founding of the Italian Socialist Party in 1892, and was editor-in-chief of its organ, Avanti! (1896-1904). Gradually shifted to the reformist camp, and became a member of parliament in 1909. Expelled from the Socialist Party in 1912, he founded the Reformist Socialist Party.
