1795‐1861 King of Prussia. Reigned 1840-61. Son of Wilhelm III. A romantic who saw the ideal of a national system in the class system of the Middle Ages, he was well educated and attracted the hopes of the people when he ascended to the throne, but he had no understanding of the new era of constitutionalism, and during the 1848-49 Revolution (1848 Revolution), his indecisive attitude led to the loss of his own authority as king. In 1857, he became mentally unstable and handed over governing power to his younger brother, Wilhelm I (acting king in 1857, regent in 1858, ascended to the throne in 1861).
