One of the world's leading retailers, with general merchandise and shoe retail chains. Headquartered in New York. Woolworth was founded in 1879 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania by Frank Winfield Woolworth (1852-1919) as a 5- and 10-cent store. In 1912, the company consolidated its stores, which had grown to several hundred, to form the Woolworth Corporation, and in 1913 built its headquarters building in New York (then the tallest building in the world). By the time of Woolworth's death in 1919, the company already had a total of over 1,000 stores in the United States and Canada, and annual sales had exceeded $100 million.
