… The history of bookmaking after the Industrial Revolution, apart from the beauty of appearance that came with the advancement of printing as a reproduction technology, can be said to have been a steady decline in bookbinding. A simple binding method (case binding) appeared that was convenient for dealing with the ever-increasing demand for bookbinding, and gradually most books were bound in this way before leaving the publishers. The difference in appearance was slight, but the crucial difference was that, as the name "tojitsuke" suggests, books up until then were firmly bound by a spine binding string (three to five strings that cross the stitching thread at right angles and run on the outside of the spine) wrapped in strong linen thread, which was passed through holes in the core paper (carton) of the cover, whereas with case binding, the cover and the contents were made separately. …

… 産業革命以後の書物造型の歴史は,複製技術としての印刷の進歩に伴う外見上の美しさは別として,製本面では堕落の一途をたどるといってもいいすぎではない。増加する一方の製本需要に対処するのにかっこうな簡易製本(くるみ製本case binding)が出現し,しだいにほとんどの書物がこの方法で製本されてから版元を出ることになってゆく。外見の差はわずかだが,決定的な違いは,それまでの書物が〈とじつけ〉と呼ばれる名のとおり,強い麻糸にかかえこまれた背とじひも(かがり糸と直角に交差し,背の外側に3~5本通っている)を,表紙の芯紙(カルトン)にあけた穴に通し,しっかりととじつけてあるのに対し,くるみ製本は表紙と中身を別々につくる。…
