After World War II, Galicia was annexed by Ukraine, and agricultural collectivization was forced upon it, the Ukrainian Catholic Church, which was dominant there, was outlawed, and about 500,000 people from Galicia were exiled to Siberia. The Ukrainian Republic, along with the Belarusian Republic, joined the United Nations immediately after its founding, a decision made at the Yalta Conference in 1945.
