…There is no record of a five-story pagoda ever collapsing in an earthquake. Its earthquake resistance is due to, first, the central pillar that penetrates from top to bottom, forcing the five stories to deform in the same way, preventing any story from collapsing locally, and at the same time lengthening the period, and second, the pillars, ridgepole beams, and other members that make up the pagoda are loosely connected to each other, absorbing energy through what is called "backlash." In other words, it can be said to be a structure with a long period and high elasticity (or, more accurately, damping). …
