A group of caves located 25km north of Gaya in Bihar, eastern India. There are four caves on Barabar Hill and three on the neighboring Nāgārjuni Hill, and they are known as the oldest caves in India. The former three caves have inscriptions stating that they were donated to the Ajivika sect by King Ashoka, and all of the latter by his grandson, King Dasharatha. The structure imitates wooden architecture, and the interior walls and ceilings are undecorated and polished to a mirror-like finish.
