A French overseas department. A volcanic island in the Windward Islands in the Caribbean Sea. Area: 1,110 km2, population: 399,000 (1996). Capital: Fort-de-France. The terrain is mostly mountainous. In 1902, a huge eruption of Mount Pelee (1,397m) destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre, killing about 30,000 people. Most of the inhabitants are black, some of whom are descendants of immigrants from the former French Indochina. It was "discovered" by Columbus in 1493, but has been French territory since the French began colonizing it in 1635. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
