A town in Kiso County in southwestern Nagano Prefecture. The town is located along the Kiso Kaido (National Route 19), and the Chuo Main Line runs through it. Most of the surrounding area is national forest, with many beautiful cypress forests in particular. It has long been known as a timber distribution center, and is home to lumber and woodworking industries. It is home to the Kakehashi Road and Nezame-no-toko, which were difficult sections of the Nakasendo road, and is also the trailhead for Mount Komagatake, which towers at the eastern end of the town. 168.42 km2 . 5,245 people (2010). 長野県南西部,木曾郡の町。木曾街道(国道19号線)沿いに市街があり,中央本線が通じる。周辺は大部分が国有林で特にヒノキの美林が多い。古くから木材集散地として知られ,製材・木工業を行う。中山道の難所であった桟(かけはし)道や寝覚ノ床(ねざめのとこ)があり,また東端にそびえる駒ヶ岳の登山口。168.42km2。5245人(2010)。
