Turkana people - Turkana

A pastoral people living in the dry grasslands of northwestern Kenya. They belong to the central group of the Nyiro-Hamitic peoples, and have an estimated population of about 360,000. They practice transhumance, splitting into young men who move with cattle and household leaders who lead goats, sheep, and camels. The age group system involves two halves called "stones" and "leopards," with fathers and sons belonging to different halves. There is no chiefdom, and the social unit is a joint family of about three generations. Exogamous clans have no political or economic function, and are the unit of taboos imposed on women. They are in conflict with neighboring ethnic groups due to cattle raids, and are known for their stamina. In 1980, they lost many of their livestock, including cattle and goats, due to a drought, and their population is said to have declined considerably.
