A spa town in the Allier department in central France, located on the east bank of the Allier River. Marshal Pétain's Vichy government was established here during World War II (1940-44). Known as a hot spring resort since Roman times, it became popular as a health resort from the 17th century onwards, and developed further with the visit of Napoleon III in the 19th century. The hot springs are bicarbonate springs with temperatures ranging from 17 to 66°C. There are spa resorts, hotels and sports facilities, and more than 130,000 people visit every year. The mineral water is said to be good for the liver and stomach, and is exported to various countries as "Vichy water". There is also light industry, including food and pharmaceuticals.
