A river in the southeast of Australia, in the southern part of New South Wales. It originates in the Snowy Mountains (part of the Great Dividing Range), flows westwards, and joins tributaries such as the Lachlan River before flowing into the Murray River. It is 1,579 km long. The Murrumbidgee Irrigation District (area 180,000 ha) in the middle and lower reaches is a representative irrigated agricultural area in the country, where rice, wheat, fruit trees, etc. are cultivated. It was surveyed by Sturt in 1829. The name comes from an aboriginal word meaning "big water." [Tatsuya Taniuchi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
