…It is a translation of the Latin cantus firmus and the Italian canto fermo, meaning “fixed melody.” It is often abbreviated as cf. In Western polyphonic music, especially from the 12th to the 16th centuries, an existing melody was often placed in a specific voice (usually the tenor) and used as a foundation for composing the other voices.
