In Roman times it was called Durovernum, a Celtic name meaning "river town." The Saxons named it Cantwaraburh, or "Kentish town," and made it the capital of the Kingdom of Kent around 560 during the Heptarchate period. In 597, Pope Gregory I sent the monk Augustine and his party to spread Christianity.
