France had a monopoly on the world's first flying vehicles, with the hot air balloon (1783, Montgolfier brothers), hydrogen balloon (1783, Charles), parachute (1797, Garnelin), and airship (1852, Giffard), but when it came to airplanes, it fell behind the Wright brothers in America. The first airplane to fly in France was in 1906, and it was made by Alberto Santos Dumont (1873-1932), a Brazilian living in Paris. However, France had a large number of researchers, and many of them had been working on airplane research with their own ideas since the end of the 19th century, so the results of their research all came to fruition around 1908, and airplanes with excellent performance appeared one after another.
