?-970 Founder of the Kingdom of Castile. Became the first Count of Castile around 930. During the reign of Ramiro II of Leon (930?-950 or 951), Castile was forced into complete submission to the king. From the second half of the 10th century onwards, feudalism developed in the Kingdom of Leon, weakening royal authority. Furthermore, under the influence of Islamic military offensives and French feudalism introduced through Navarrese, the County of Castile achieved de facto independence by 970, based on the existence of a widespread free peasant population.
