Susa (English spelling)

Susa (English spelling)

Located in the Khuzestan region in southwestern Iran, this site spans from prehistoric to Islamic times. It is located on the left bank of the Sha'ul River, which joins the Qar'un River, and is most famous for its Achaemenid Persian city. At the northern end of the site are the Apadana, a throne room, and Darius' palace, to the southwest of which is the Acropolis, and to the southeast are three consecutive tells (ruins) called the King's City, and to the east of the King's City is a tell called the City of Engineers. Painted pottery named Susa I type has been excavated from the Acropolis, along with other pottery with animal, human, and geometric designs, which are closely related to the Sialk III and Ubaid periods. The tell containing Apadana and Darius' palace is called the Apadana Hill. Babylonian and Elamite clay tablets were found in Darius' palace, and 15 layers from the Islamic to Elamite periods were identified in the city by the French excavation team Ghilshman. A large hall was also discovered on the right bank of the Shaur River. At the foot of the Acropolis hill, adjacent to the east of present-day Susa, there is a museum that houses the excavated items.
