Barbary ape (English spelling)

Japanese: バーバリーエイプ（英語表記）Barbary ape

An Old World monkey (illustration) of the Cercopithecidae family of primates. A monkey with a grayish-ochre color that gives it a dirty impression. Its tail is barely visible. It lives in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, and in Gibraltar. Also known as maggot. It is slightly smaller than the Japanese macaque, with long, curly fur. Like the Japanese macaque, it is cold-resistant and lives in snowy areas. It lives in North Africa and Europe, and is the only macaque monkey not native to Asia, but during the Pleistocene it had a wider distribution range than these regions.

霊長目オナガザル科の旧世界ザル（イラスト）。灰色がかった黄土色でうす汚れた印象を与えるサル。外見的には尾はほとんど認めえない。モロッコ，アルジェリアのアトラス山脈沿いおよびジブラルタルにすむ。別名マゴットmagot。ニホンザルより少し小さく，体毛は長くて縮れぎみで，ニホンザル同様耐寒性が強くて積雪地帯にも生息する。北アフリカ，ヨーロッパに生息し，かつアジア産でない唯一のマカク属のサルであるが，洪積世にはこれらの地域にもより広い分布域をもっていた。
