Somata crafts - Somatazaiku

This is a type of aogai lacquerware (raden). It began when the second Maeda Masatoshi (1649-1706), lord of Toyama in the early Edo period, praised the skills of Kyoto-based Somata Kiyosuke and ordered him to be the domain's aogai craftsman. His sons Mitsumasa and Motosuke took over the family business, and their descendants have served the domain as aogai craftsmen for generations. The technique involves cutting thin shells into small pieces and pasting them like a mosaic on a colored or gold leafed surface to create patterns, resulting in a style with vivid colors. Since the Meiji period, Takaoka City has been the center of this style.

漆工の青貝(あおがい)細工（螺鈿(らでん)）の一種。江戸前期の富山藩主、2代の前田正甫(まさとし)（1649―1706）が京都の杣田清輔(きよすけ)の技を賞して藩の青貝師に命じたことから始まり、その子光正(みつまさ)・元輔(もとすけ)兄弟が家業を継ぎ、代々子孫も青貝師として藩に仕えた。技法は、着色または金箔(きんぱく)を貼(は)った面に、薄貝を細かく切ってモザイクのように貼り、文様を表現したもので、色感の鮮やかな作風である。明治以降は高岡市がその中心となっている。
