This is a type of aogai lacquerware (raden). It began when the second Maeda Masatoshi (1649-1706), lord of Toyama in the early Edo period, praised the skills of Kyoto-based Somata Kiyosuke and ordered him to be the domain's aogai craftsman. His sons Mitsumasa and Motosuke took over the family business, and their descendants have served the domain as aogai craftsmen for generations. The technique involves cutting thin shells into small pieces and pasting them like a mosaic on a colored or gold leafed surface to create patterns, resulting in a style with vivid colors. Since the Meiji period, Takaoka City has been the center of this style. [Goka loyal retainer] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
