A village in Kitakanbara County in northern Niigata Prefecture. Population 7,657 (1995). The western part of the village is made up of an alluvial fan on the north bank of the mouth of the Kaji River, and the eastern part is made up of the Kushigata Mountains. The area is known for producing high-quality Kajigawa rice, centered on the Shiunjigata New Fields, which were created by land reclamation during the Kyoho era (1716-1736). As a single-crop rice paddy area, mechanization was implemented early on, and the rice yield per unit area is among the highest in the prefecture. In recent years, livestock farming, vegetable cultivation, and tulip bulb cultivation have also become popular, and shiitake mushroom cultivation and Nishikigoi carp farming are also carried out in the mountains. The Kajigawa cherry blossoms, known as the long bank ten ri long, were cut down for river improvement work after the floods of 1966 and 1967, but restoration work is underway.
