One of the cases reported by S. Freud in Studies on Hysteria (1895) was the 24-year-old daughter of a Hungarian landowner. Her main complaint was pain in both legs and difficulty walking. During Freud's analysis, she became aware of the fact that her illness had begun when she had gone on a summer getaway with her sister and her husband, and that when her sister died she had thought, "Now I can become my brother-in-law's wife," and then developed hatred, and her condition improved. Freud thought that her love for her brother-in-law was repressed out of a sense of morality, and that it was separated from her consciousness and transformed into physical symptoms, causing her illness.
