The largest city in eastern India. Capital of West Bengal. In 1999, its name was changed to Kolkata (Bengali pronunciation). It is a trading port located about 140 km upstream from the mouth of the Hugli River, a tributary of the Ganga. It is the center of commerce, industry, and finance. Industries include jute, cotton, metals, machinery, and chemicals. Founded by the British East India Company in 1690. It was the capital of British India from 1757 to 1911. It has a university (established in 1857), a national museum (established in 1814), a zoo, a botanical garden (famous for the 180-year-old banyan tree), and the East India Company's Fort William. It is densely populated and has various urban problems such as pollution, housing, and sanitation.
