Elisha

Elisha
A Hebrew prophet who appeared in the latter half of the 9th century BCE. He continued Elijah's work of establishing the faith in Yahweh, and fought against the Phoenician worship of Baal over two generations of the Omri dynasty, Joram and Jehu. Elisha's words of praise for Elijah, "the chariot of Israel and its horseman," were given to Elisha by King Joash. He was highly popular and supported by the group of prophets, and he completed the solo task of banishing Baal from the country, something that Elijah had been unable to accomplish (2 Kings 2 and following). Elisha's name means "God saves."

Elisha
Elisha ben Abuyah

Born: Around 70, Jerusalem
[Dead]?
A representative Jewish legal scholar in Palestine in the first half of the 2nd century. He was counted among the wise men, but later abandoned his faith. Although he is quoted in the Talmud, he is said to have been heavily influenced by Greek culture and developed a kind of Gnostic dualism. His intellectual tendencies led to him being viewed as a heretic in Judaism, which is said to have been the cause of his apostasy.
