A Hebrew prophet who appeared in the latter half of the 9th century BCE. He continued Elijah's work of establishing the faith in Yahweh, and fought against the Phoenician worship of Baal over two generations of the Omri dynasty, Joram and Jehu. Elisha's words of praise for Elijah, "the chariot of Israel and its horseman," were given to Elisha by King Joash. He was highly popular and supported by the group of prophets, and he completed the solo task of banishing Baal from the country, something that Elijah had been unable to accomplish (2 Kings 2 and following). Elisha's name means "God saves." Elisha |
