A chariot racing track in ancient Rome. One side of the rectangle was a semicircle, and the stables were located on the opposite side of the semicircle. The U-shaped area had spectator stands, and races with up to 12 horses were held. The Great Circus of the Roman Republic was the oldest, with a circumference of 1,500 meters. Incidentally, Circus is said to be the origin of the word circus. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
