Koine (English spelling)

Koine means "common language" in Greek, and was the Greek language used widely in the Hellenistic world from the late 4th century BC to the middle of the 6th century AD. It originated from the Attic dialect, which was the dominant dialect of ancient Greek, but since it was used not only in mainland Greece and Macedonia, but also in Asia and Africa, and played the role of an international common language, it was supplemented with pronunciations and words unique to each region. The written form of Koine can be found in the Septuagint and the New Testament. Modern Greek is a result of changes that occurred from Koine through the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

ギリシア語で「共通語」の意味で，前4世紀後半から後6世紀の中頃まで，広くヘレニズム世界に行われたギリシア語。古代ギリシア語の諸方言のなかで優位に立ったアッチカ方言がもとになっているが，行われた地域がギリシア本土やマケドニアばかりでなく，アジアやアフリカにも及んで国際共通語の役割を果したため，各地域固有の言語の発音や単語が加わった。書き言葉としてのコイネーは，『七十人訳聖書』や新約聖書にみることができる。現代ギリシア語は，このコイネーが中世，近世を経て変化してきたものである。
