camomile

Japanese: camomile
camomile

...A cold-resistant perennial plant of the Asteraceae family native to Europe. Its Japanese name is Kouyakamirure. The genus name Anthemis comes from the Greek word anthemon (meaning flower), and is said to have been named because it is very prolific. It grows to a height of about 30-60cm. The slender, stiff stems grow thickly and branch out. The leaves are oblong and pinnately lobed twice. Small, single yellow chrysanthemum-like flowers bloom at the top of the stem from June to September. There are many horticultural varieties, including white and deep yellow flowered varieties as well as double-flowered varieties. There are just under 100 species in the genus, of which about 10 are cultivated. In addition to A. tinctoria L., these include A. nobilis L. (English name: camomile), famous as a stomachic, tonic and medicine for hysteria, and A. arvensis L., an annual plant that blooms with white flowers and is used as a cut flower.
