…When trying to determine the cause of the general circulation in wind systems, it has long been a mystery why westward strengthening occurs, such as the Kuroshio Current and the Gulf Stream, even though there are no particularly strong winds blowing westward in either the Pacific or Atlantic Oceans. However, in 1948, H. Stommel modeled the wind system and presented a theory that took into account not only the effect of the Earth's rotation (Coriolis force) but also the effect of the Coriolis force varying with latitude (which occurs because the Earth is spherical), explaining the westward strengthening of the circulation. Stommel's results are shown in Figure 5. …
