On the other hand, the earliest sculptures are female nude figures from the Paleolithic period (probably the Aurignacian period), such as the “Venus with a Cup” discovered in the Lausselle cave and the “Venus of Lespugue” excavated in Lespugue, Haute-Garonne. While cave paintings are characterized by their “realism,” these “Venus” figures, which are thought to have a magical meaning of praying for fertility, astonish us with their bold deformations that boldly exaggerate the important parts of the body. …
