… The formation of the group and its techniques began in the 1890s. The core of the group was made up of students of the Académie des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) of G. Moreau, who had been given a liberal education and who himself, in his later years, showed colors and brushstrokes that were the precursors of Fauvism in his watercolors and other works, namely Matisse, Marquet, Charles Camoin (1879-1964), and Henri Charles Manguin (1874-1949). Matisse in particular learned from the Post-Impressionists (especially Gauguin) and the Neo-Impressionists (especially Signac and Cross) about arabesque forms and the relationship between pure and complementary colors, and was already approaching Fauvist expression at the end of the century. …
