Gold pool - Kinpuru (English spelling) gold pool

Gold pool - Kinpuru (English spelling) gold pool
A system agreed upon among eight central banks in Europe and the United States to prevent speculative fluctuations in the price of gold on the London free gold market and the resulting disruption of the international exchange system. The central banks of the participating countries pooled a portion of their gold reserves and bought and sold gold on the London gold market as needed (the Bank of England handled the actual operations on their behalf), in order to prevent fluctuations in the price of gold. The United States called for the formation of the gold pool in response to the sudden rise in gold prices caused by dollar instability in October 1960, but it was not until November 1962 that the pool actually entered the market for the first time. However, from around 1965, the amount of gold sold increased due to chronic concerns about the pound and the United States' current balance of payments deficit, and France effectively withdrew from the pool in 1967. Furthermore, the dual price system for gold was adopted in March 1968, and the gold pool ceased to function.
