Echigo Disturbance - Echigo Disturbance

Between 1679 (Enpo 7) and 1681 (Tenwa 1), there was a family dispute in the Takada Domain in Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture). The domain's lord, Matsudaira Echigonokami Mitsunaga (son of Tadanao and grandson of the second shogun Tokugawa Hidetada by marriage), left the administration of the domain to the kokuro (chief retainers), but the one who held real power among them was Mitsunaga's sister's husband, Oguri Mimasaka Masanori. In opposition to this, the retainers promoted Mitsunaga's younger brother, Nagami Okura Nagayoshi, and banded together with the chief retainer Ogita Shume and others, claiming that Oguri was extravagant and disloyal, and spreading rumors that Oguri's son Kamon was being adopted by Mitsunaga and was trying to take over the lord's family. Finally, in 1679, the anti-Oguri faction (who called themselves the Otamekata and called their opponents the Gyakuikata) came armed and stormed into the Oguri residence, but a clash was averted. However, the shogunate found out about it, and Otamekata's Nagami and Ogita were punished that same year. This further enraged the Otamekata, who lobbied the shogunate, and in 1681, Tsunayoshi, who had become the fifth shogun the previous year, made an extraordinary personal decision. As a result, Mimasaka and others committed seppuku, Nagami and Ogita were exiled, and Mitsunaga's 260,000 koku of land was confiscated for failing to quell the unrest among his retainers. Mitsunaga was placed under the custody of the Matsuyama Domain in Iyo, but was pardoned six years later. Later, in 1698 (Genroku 11), Mitsunaga's adopted son Nobutomi was granted a fief of 100,000 koku in the Tsuyama Domain in Mimasaka Province (Okayama Prefecture), and the family was restored to power.
