These are the convicts and pardoned people who fought to obtain citizenship in Australia from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, and their supporters. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Britain expelled people who were convicted of breaking the law, and in 1786, the colony of New South Wales in Australia was designated a penal colony by Britain. In New South Wales, those who had completed their sentences were given land, and some of them were successful. However, they were excluded from public office and social circles. Governor L. Macquarie implemented a policy of giving opportunities to emancipists, but they were not successful due to strong resistance from the free colonists. In the 1820s and 1830s, as the voting system for adult males was promoted, some influential people and low-income free colonists supported them, and in 1842 the restrictions were lifted and they obtained citizenship.
