A monk from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. The founder of the Bodhidharma sect (a branch of Japanese Zen Buddhism). Dainichi was a Buddhist priest. He started out as a Tendai monk, attaining enlightenment without a teacher, and opened Sanbo-ji Temple in the rice fields of Settsu (Osaka), where he preached Zen. However, he was criticized by people for not having a teacher, so in 1188 (Bun'ei 4), he sent his disciples Renchu and Shoben to Ikuozan Settan Tokuko (1121-1203) in Song, where they received approval. Eizan suppressed their activities, and Eisai also criticized Nonin's Zen, but the Bodhidharma religious group became a major force, and later, that group became the core of the formation of the Dogen sect. He was stabbed to death by his nephew, Taira no Kagekiyo, in the 5th or 6th year of the Kenkyu era. Sanbo-ji Temple continued to exist as a temple of Shari-relic worship throughout the Middle Ages, and related documents are preserved at Shoho-ji Temple (Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture).
