…China's largest publishing company during the late Qing and Republican periods. Founded in Shanghai in 1897 (23rd year of the Guangxu era) by Xia Ruifang and 3 others. Emphasizing the editorial department, they established a foundation by publishing elementary and middle school textbooks, and published magazines such as Oriental Magazine (first published in 1904) and Monthly Novels. They also published a wide range of books, from reference books such as Ciyuan and the Chinese Biographical Dictionary, to practical books and literature, to satisfy the needs of all classes of people. They also became the leader in the publishing world by importing new printing techniques ahead of others, and at one time boasted such influence that they accounted for half of all Chinese publications, with the motto of one book a day. …
