King of France (reigned 1774-1792). Grandson of Louis XV. His involvement in the American War of Independence led to a deterioration in the country's finances. At first he appointed reformers such as Turgot and Necker, but the king himself was indecisive and the reforms were opposed by the privileged classes, leading to failure and ultimately to the French Revolution. Influenced by a reactionary group including Queen Marie Antoinette, he attempted to flee the country in 1791 and was arrested in Varennes. In 1792 the monarchy was abolished, and the following year he was executed by decision of the National Convention. → Related articles Arque-Senans | Tennis Court Oath | Louis [XVII] | Louis [XVIII] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
