King of France (reigned 1774-1792). Grandson of Louis XV. His involvement in the American War of Independence led to a deterioration in the country's finances. At first he appointed reformers such as Turgot and Necker, but the king himself was indecisive and the reforms were opposed by the privileged classes, leading to failure and ultimately to the French Revolution. Influenced by a reactionary group including Queen Marie Antoinette, he attempted to flee the country in 1791 and was arrested in Varennes. In 1792 the monarchy was abolished, and the following year he was executed by decision of the National Convention.

フランス国王（在位1774年―1792年）。ルイ15世の孫。アメリカ独立戦争に介入したため財政悪化をまねく。初めチュルゴやネッケルらの改革派を登用したが，国王自身が優柔不断のため特権身分の反対にあい改革は挫折，ついにフランス革命を招いた。王妃マリー・アントアネットらの反動的グループに左右され，1791年国外脱出を企ててバレンヌで逮捕。1792年王政は廃止され，翌年国民公会の決定により処刑。
