Old and new inspections - Kokenshinken

Japanese: 古検･新検 - こけんしんけん

A term used in land surveys during the Edo period. The distinction is made as follows: (1) the Taiko land surveys conducted during the Tensho and Keicho eras (1573-1615) are called "old surveys," and the Tokugawa surveys conducted afterwards are called "new surveys." (2) The surveys are divided into those before and after the promulgation of the Shogunate's Land Survey Articles in February 1690 (Genroku 3) during the Edo period. (3) The surveys are divided into those before and after the promulgation of the Shogunate's New Field Survey Ordinance in June 1726 (Kyoho 11). Of the above, (1) is applicable mainly in the Kinai region, but not in other regions. (2) and (3) are classifications based on the respective time periods, but in reality, there were very few areas where general land surveys were conducted after the Genroku and Kyoho eras, which would have been the "new surveys," and these are also not applicable.

江戸時代の検地用語。この区別には，(1)天正･慶長年間(1573‐1615)に行われた太閤検地を古検，その後徳川氏の検地を新検という。(2)江戸時代1690年(元禄3)2月，幕府の検地条目公布を基準としてその前後に分ける。(3)1726年(享保11)6月，幕府の新田検地条令公布を基準としてその前後に分ける。以上のうち，(1)はおもに畿内では適用できるが他の地域では不可。(2)(3)の場合，それぞれの時点での区分であるが，現実には新検に当たる元禄･享保年間以降に総検地を実施している地域はごく例外でこれも不可。
