A type of library that developed in the 18th and 19th centuries in the UK and US, and is a forerunner of modern public libraries. Libraries are maintained by users who contribute to the operating costs in some way, often in the form of annual membership fees. It refers to libraries that are voluntarily established and run by people, such as club organizations known as "book clubs" that discuss current affairs using materials purchased collectively, or non-profit libraries with permanent collections as member organizations, such as Franklin's Philadelphia Library Company and Carlyle's (Thomas Carlyle 1795-1881) London Library.
