Served as a university lecturer, and made his debut with Lucky Jim (1954), a novel about a working-class professor who rebels against the snobbish atmosphere and behaves eccentrically. He was regarded as a representative writer of the "angry young men" movement. He subsequently published novels such as The Anti-Death League (66), Ending Up (74), and The Alteration (76), as well as essays such as Socialism and the Intellectuals (57) and Kipling and His World (75).
